Light
- Low light--interior of a bright room or on the windowsill in a north-facing window.
- Medium light--on the windowsill in an east-facing window, or underneath a desk lamp.
- Bright light--in a south or west-facing window, or underneath grow lights.
If your plant is getting scorched, move it away from the window. If it is getting leggy (long stems in between leaves), move it closer to the window. Remember that light intensity varies during the year, so a plant that is happy in an east-facing window during the summer might enjoy a south- or west-facing window during the winter!
Water
- Consistent moisture--keep the soil damp but not soaked. Water about once per week. A self-watering pot can help maintain this moisture level!
- Occasional moisture--let the soil dry between waterings. Water every two weeks or less often. Make sure your pot has adequate drainage!
Plants will use more or less water depending on the amount of light they're getting, the volume of roots in their soil, and the temperature and relative humidity of your home. Pay close attention and adjust your watering frequency accordingly!
Overwatering is not about the amount of water a plant gets, but rather the frequency with which its soil is saturated with water. It is much easier to kill a plant by overwatering than underwatering, so if your plant isn't showing obvious signs of wilting, you can safely wait another day!
